More Ways to Save Money

Little Things That Can Make a Difference

    More Ways to Save....There are many ways to save money besides a savings account or using coupons.

    How about saving money with your vehicle.

    Did you know:

  • There are websites out there that will let you check around and see who has the cheapest gas in your town. And with fuel continually getting higher every little bit helps;
  • Little things like making sure your vehicle is tuned up and your tires are properly inflated will help on your gas usage;
  • If you drive the speed limit or no more than 60 mph which ever is less you'll save on the gas you use.
  • Some of the larger grocery chains who also have gas stations, they often offer a store perks card for saving money, not only on your groceries, but once you spend a certain amount they may offer a few cents off per gallon the next purchase of gas you make.
  • What about auto insurance.... If you haven't done so in awhile, check around and compare premiums. Who knows maybe you'll be able to lower your deductible and save money on your premiums. There are many free auto insurance quote sites out there.
  • Does your office/workplace offer ridesharing incentives, where they pay you to carpool or use public transit? Check with your HR Department, more and more agencies have a air quality goal to meet, so they should be encouraging alternative transportation options. Ridesharing not only saves you on gas, but also saves on the wear and tear on your vehicle. Yes there are some drawbacks to ridesharing, but the money you save should outweigh most of the drawbacks. Especially if you drive a substantial distance each day.
  • Remember every little bit helps and saving money makes cents that adds up to dollars.

Here are some ways you can save on your prescriptions and over the counter medicines:

  • Go generic whenever possible. Always ask the pharmacist if there is a generic for your prescriptions and what the cost difference is. You may be pleasantly surprised at what you will save.
  • Use mail order - some plans allow you to order three months of your prescription for the price of two months. Again go generic if you can and save even more.
  • In our town there are now two pharmacies that offer an extensive list of prescription drugs for only $4 each. Check your local pharmacies and see if they offer this also. The pharmacies in our town include one large chain department store and a local chain drug store.
  • When buying over the counter medicines, check the store brand or generic brand. Compare the ingredients on both packages, you may find the off brand medicines have the exact same ingredients. So why pay full price if you don't have to.

Saving with your taxes

A couple more ways to save with your taxes;

  • Do you receive a substantial refund each year when you do your taxes? Why not reduce the amount of taxes taken out of your payroll and use the additional amount in your paycheck for your savings and/or reducing your debt. But remember to think ahead for the year and make sure you don't have any life changes that will affect your taxes. You don't want to wind up having to come up with the money to pay your taxes at the end of the year either.
  • How about putting part of your payroll into a tax deferred retirement plan, if your employer offers it. This is a great way to start saving for your retirement whether it's just around the corner or many years away. Check out the Retirement page for more ideas here.

    Planning a Home Improvement Project

    When you know you have an upcoming home improvement project - Plan ahead, save and wait for the No Sales Tax Days (if you live in a sales tax state). One of the home improvement stores we have locally has a No Sales Tax Day two to four times a year. Don't forget to also go online and sign up on the home improvement stores site. Not only will they let you know what will be on sale, but they may also periodically send out online coupons for either online or in store purchases. When you sign up on these sites they also give you How To Projects.
