Tips to Save Money Before You Buy a Vehicle

Are you thinking of purchasing a vehicle, new or used? Don't go to the dealership empty handed. Here are a few money saving tips to consider to do prior to purchasing your car or truck.

#1 - Research, Research, Research - Your 1st tip, don't just run to the dealership and settle for a automobile you don't really want or let the salesperson tell you what you want. This is an important decision that you will have to live with for the next few years. So research, research, research. Compare similar vehicles and options, check and see what incentives are available. The time you spend researching may save you hundreds of dollars if not more on your purchase. There are so many resources out there now online. Walk into the dealership with your printout so you know approximately what your automobile should cost, not what the salesperson is trying to sell it to you for.

#2 - Get a Pre-Approved Loan - There's nothing more disappointing than arriving at the dealership, finding what you want, only to find out you don't qualify for a loan (or at least with them). Wouldn't it be nice to know ahead how much of a loan you qualify for and that you are pre-approved for it. There are several agencies in your local area that you can apply at. Being pre-approved doesn't mean you have to take the loan from the approving agency. It just provides you with the peace and mind knowing that you are pre-approved and how much you can spend on your automobile.

Once you are ready to purchase your car or truck you can apply at the dealership or elsewhere for a lower rate.

#3 - Credit Unions, Auto Clubs - Do you belong to a major warehouse club, if you do check online and see if they have an auto buying program. They will work in conjunction with the dealerships to provide additional saving to you. If your not already a member check out the site or go in store and get some information. The cost of the membership may be well worth the savings on the vehicle purchase. Another great place to check is with your local Credit Union they also work with the local dealerships to provide special pricing and even financing. Do you belong to an Auto Club, check with them and see if they are offering an specials.

A couple of years ago when we purchased our commuter car we went through a local credit union, through a program called Autoland. We simply told them what car we wanted (of course after we did our research) along with the features and what we were willing to pay. They did all the legwork, once they found a car that fit our requests, they called us to make sure it is what we want. Once we agreed on the vehicle they even delivered it to my office. We didn't have to deal with salespeople. It was so nice.

Recently we purchased another vehicle and this time we went through the Auto Buying Program through our local Warehouse Club. The club sent us an email with several local dealerships and a contact person for each auto dealership. Again we didn't have to deal with salespeople, just the warehouse club's contact person, which is not normally an outside salesperson. We picked out our vehicle, agreed on the price, filled out the paperwork, while they detailed and fueled it up, and left with our new vehicle all within a couple of hours. Again with out much hassle. So by researching first which vehicle we wanted, then checking around and seeing who was working with the dealerships to provide hassle free shopping (the Warehouse Club, Credit Unions, Local Banks) and finally by being pre-approved through our credit union and knowing upfront what we could spend, and that it was within our budget, these extra steps made the buying process so much easier. Another bonus, once we got to the dealership and decided on a truck, we checked and we were approved for a loan through the dealership at a lower rate than the credit union's.

Remember you are the consumer, this is a major purchase, don't settle for less or more than what you can afford. Buy what you want, don't let the salesperson tell you what you want. Go prepared and save money, because Saving Money Makes Cents!
